Chang & Grice Named Tar Heel Peformers Of The Week

Two freshmen, Jackie Chang (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and Casey Grice (College Station, Texas), have been named the Tar Heel Performers of the Week for the week of September 13-19, 2010. They led the Carolina women's golf team to its first win since 2004 as the Tar Heels won the Cougar Classic which was played at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, S.C. Chang and Grice tied for runner-up honors in the individual race at both carded a three-under-par 213 total. Chang fired rounds of 72-69-72 while Grice shot 71-72-70. The Tar Heels finished with a four-under 860 team total with rounds of 285-285-290, eight strokes ahead of Mississippi's 868 total. This was Carolina's first event of the fall campaign. The Tar Heels return to action Sept. 24-26 at the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship in Franklin, Tenn.

Rich scored four goals and added an assist as the top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team won the championship of the 2010 Duke Nike Classic with wins over Middle Tennessee State 7-1 and fifth-ranked Florida 2-0. Rich had game-winning goals in both wins over the weekend, was named to the All-Tournament Team and now leads the Tar Heels in goals with seven and points with 19 in the 2010 campaign. Rich had the first hat trick of her career and also assisted on the first goal in the win over the Blue Raiders. Two days later, she scored the game-winner in the 61st minute as the Tar Heels won a hard-fought battle against the fifth-ranked Gators. Rich's performance helped Carolina finish up the non-conference portion of its 2010 schedule with an 8-0-1 record.

Caitlin Van Sickle helped anchor a defense that gave up just one goal and only five shots over the weekend and also scored a goal in each game as UNC picked up a pair of wins. Carolina beat Old Dominion 3-1 on Friday, with Van Sickle scoring in the 69th minute. She was one of five different players to score in a 5-0 win over William & Mary on Sunday, when the Tar Heels gave up just one shot. Van Sickle has started every game for top-ranked and undefeated UNC (7-0) and has five goals this season.

Senior Christine Vaughen led North Carolina to a first place finish in the 2010 Tar Heel Classic collecting 26 kills and 15 blocks in three wins over the weekend. The Simi Valley, Calif., native earned all-tournament accolades after registering a .333 hitting percentage and notching at least five blocks in three match victories. The senior uncorked 11 kills and six blocks in a 3-1 win over Ball State Friday night. On the season, Vaughen is averaging 2.60 kills per set with a team-best .363 hitting percentage.

White ran for a career-high 113 yards on 17 carries and scored a touchdown in North Carolina's 30-24 loss to Georgia Tech. The senior tailback from Asheville, N.C., also caught two passes for 35 yards. In the third quarter, White accounted for all 47 yards of Carolina's scoring drive that gave the Tar Heels a 24-17 lead. He had runs of 24, 19 and 4 on that drive.
ZOE DE BRUYCKER

Zoe De Bruycker won four matches over three days to claim the section A singles title at the Duke Fab Four Invite in Cary, N.C. The Saratoga, Calif., sophomore upset Northwestern's Maria Mosolova, the nation's No. 6-ranked player, in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, before defeating teammate Lauren McHale in the semis and Duke's Mary Clayton in the final.
JALIL ANIBABA

Jalil Anibaba played the full 90 minutes in Carolina's 1-0 win over rival No. 11 Duke on Friday. Anibaba and the Tar Heel backline held the nation's leading scorer to just four shots, four less than his average, en route to improving to 2-0 in the ACC. The Davis, Calif., native has starred at center back for the Tar Heels who have yet to allow a goal in conference play.
