The University of North Carolina gymnastics team placed second behind Rutgers in its meet on Saturday, Jan. 22, with a score of 190.975. The team scored ahead of Penn and Brown, respectively, in the multi-team meet in Piscataway, N.J. Morgan Evans won her second-straight all-around title but the team as a whole did not perform up to its normal standards.
"That's the value of early season meets, as a team we have to learn how to compete every week," said Head Coach Derek Galvin. "There were great individual performances. It was not as sharp as the George Washington Invitational but still pretty good."
The Tar Heels started out well on beam, with Morgan Evans placing second at 9.700 and freshman Kristin Aloi posting a third place 9.675. Krista Jasper performed possibly the most dynamic beam routine of her college career, placing seventh with a 9.625. These strong performances led the team to a first place finish in beam with a team total of 48.200.
Floor exercise was up next, where the team has been focusing on enhancing their tumbling skills. The Tar Heels looked strong, with three finishing in the top ten, but could not beat out a strong effort by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Kristin Aloi and Morgan Evans both scored a 9.700 for sixth place. It was the second time freshman Aloi's has been Carolina's strongest performer on floor. Emily Cornwell rounded out the top ten, tying for ninth at 9.675.
"We started off fairly well on balance beam then went to floor and I felt the quality of our routines on beam and floor were pretty good," said Galvin. "We had some individual performances that were fairly good; we also had several miscues."
The Tar Heels could not sustain their strong opening performances in the vault and bars events. Morgan Evans was once again the Tar Heels strongest vaulter, finishing in third place with a 9.650. Specialist Taylor Brown posted a 9.550 for sixth place. Krista Jasper continued her strong meet posting a 9.475 for tenth place. Aloi placed eleventh with a 9.450.
The Tar Heels did not perform up to their usual standards on uneven bars, typically one of the team's stronger events. Morgan Evans scored a 9.800, taking second place. Krista Jasper, the Tar Heels other all-around performer, placed fifth at 9.550. Brown placed seventh with a 9.500.
"Vault we had a couple of miscues, uneven bars we did not have a strong team performance. We had several mental errors on bars and performed well below our ability as a team."
Morgan Evans took her second all-around title in a row, posting a 38.850. Jasper finished her day in third place, with an all-around score of 38.300. Both gymnasts had a strong meet but did not perform as sharp of performances as a week ago in Washington, D.C.
"The entire team was disappointed in the end result, we have been working hard in training but we definitely had some mental errors, mental mistakes," said Galvin. "We learned that as a team we cant allow ourselves to get distracted, have mental lapses. We have to do a better job of focusing through mental fatigue. We have to do a better job."
"We know what we have to focus on and when we get back, they have tomorrow to recover and we'll start training again on Monday. We realized our weaknesses in this meet"
The Tar Heels will compete in their first dual meet on Jan. 30, at 2 p.m., versus the William and Mary Tribe.
