CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The 11th-ranked North Carolina women's swimming and diving team fell to ninth-ranked Virginia Saturday afternoon 161.5-138.5 at the University of Virginia Aquatics Center. It was the first ACC loss of the season for UNC which is now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
Three different Tar Heels -- diver Jenna Moore along with Laura Moriarty and Carly Smith -- each won two individual events.
"In the women's meet I think it was one of our better efforts against Virginia in recent years. I think we had an opportunity to win the meet being up three points with two events to go," said Rich DeSelm, UNC head coach. "But give credit to Virginia. We've got to find a way to close a meet. Our women are a better team coming out of the meet than we going in. We learned a lot about ourselves today that was very positive. We'll use today to help us get better."
Each team won eight events on the day but Virginia was able to pull away for the win by parlaying a host of second- and third-place finishes into the extra points it needed to pull away from Carolina. UNC led by 3.5 points going into the final two events but Virginia went 1-2-3 in the 200 IM and 1-2 the 400 free relay to clinch the win.
UNC junior Laura Moriarty and sophomore Carly Smith each won two individual events and swam on Carolina's victorious 200-yard medley relay team. Smith led off the medley relay, which won in 1:41.00, and then took top honors in both backstroke events, winning the 100 in 54.19 and the 200 in 1:58.21, both NCAA "B" qualifying times. Moriarty swam the breaststroke leg on the medley relay and then earned first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke, where she swam a season-best 1:02.42, and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.45. Both of those times were NCAA "B" qualifying times.
Freshman Stephanie Peacock captured the 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.92. Peacock blew away the rest of the field, finishing 8.05 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Rachel Naurath of Virginia.
Junior Jenna Moore excelled on the diving boards as she took first place in three-meter diving with a score of 277.50 and then pulled off the double with a win on the one-meter board with a score of 283.73. Senior Rebecca Kane anchored the victorious 200-yard medley relay and then won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.77 seconds, another NCAA "B" qualifying time.
UNC will return to action Thursday when the Tar Heels compete against NC State at 5 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
