CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore left-hander Hobbs Johnson threw four no-hit innings of relief to help lead the White Team past the Blue Team, 6-4, in the opening game of the Fall World Series Monday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The teams will play game two of the first three game series on Tuesday with first pitch set for 2:30 p.m.
The Blue Team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when the speed of Chaz Frank caused trouble for the White Team. Frank was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a steal before scoring on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder.
The White Team answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the first when Tommy Coyle doubled down the left field line, stole a base of his own and touched home when Matt Roberts pulled a ball through the left side for an RBI single.
Three singles from Brian Holberton, Bradley Morton and Adam Griffin resulted in another run for the Blue Team in the second, while the White Team countered by taking advantage of a Blue Team error to even the score at 2-2 after two.
Colin Moran led off the third inning by beating out an infield single and moved to second when Cody Stubbs walked. Zac LaNeve delivered a run-scoring single to keep the scoring consistent for the Blue Team en route to a 4-2 lead after three and a half.
The White Team broke through with a three-run fourth to take its first lead of the contest. Freshman starter Benton Moss found himself in a bit of trouble allowing singles to Jeff Bouton and Tommy Coyle to open the inning before issuing a free pass to Shell McCain to load the bases.
Freshman left-hander George Carter would replace Moss in the bases loaded jam. Carter walked Tom Zengel to drive in the game-tying run before getting Seth Baldwin to hit into a fielder's choice to plate another run. Matt Roberts plated his second run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field to cap off the scoring for the White Team.
That is all the White Team would need as sophomore left-hander Hobbs Johnson came on in relief of starter R.C. Orlan. Johnson would cruise through the next four innings, allowing just two base runners none of which were via a hit.
The White Team tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to provide the final 6-4 tally.
Game two of the Fall World Series is set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium with Chris Munnelly throwing for the White Team and Cody Stiles set to go for the Blue Team.
