No. 2 Tar Heels Claim 4-2 Win Over College Of Charleston

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 2 North Carolina broke open a 2-2 tie in the second half thanks its leading scorers, Billy Schuler and Enzo Martinez, who each found the back of the net to give the Tar Heels a 4-2 win over College of Charleston (5-5-3) Friday night. The win extended Carolina's unbeaten streak to nine matches as Matt Hedges and Martin Murphy each added goals.
The Tar Heels fell behind early on when the Cougars found the game-opening tally in the 17th minute. Eric Fornell chased down a through ball from Robbie Benson and was one-on-one with Scott Goodwin. Fornell was able to slot the ball past Goodwin for the first goal of the contest.
The Tar Heels responded in a flurry with Hedges and Murphy each scoring in a span of five minutes. Hedges evened the score at 1-1 in the 22nd minute after the Tar Heels earned a corner kick.
Ben Speas sent in the corner kick and the 6'4" Hedges tracked down the ball and headed the ball hard enough that the Cougar goalkeeper was unable to keep it from crossing the line. The goal was Hedges' second of the campaign.
Murphy put the Tar Heels in front in the 26th minute after a nice build up from Rob Lovejoy and Jordan Gafa. Lovejoy drove in on the right flank and passed the ball to Gafa at the corner of the box. Gafa dropped the ball to a charging Murphy who unleashed a shot from 22 yards out that beat the keeper far post on the left side for Murphy's first goal of the season.
College of Charleston evened things up 14 minutes before halftime when Tony Kattreh corralled a ball on the right side and crossed the ball into the box. Troy Peterson ran onto the ball and on the volley knocked it past Goodwin to tie the match at 2-2.
The score would remain tied until the 57th minute when Billy Schuler turned in the goal of the night. Schuler was fed a ball from Mikey Lopez and while on the move to his right sent a curling ball to the far post over the keeper to give Carolina a 3-2 advantage.
Enzo Martinez joined in the scoring in the 73rd minute when he put the finishing touches on Carolina's third straight win. Martinez gathered a loose ball in the attacking third and weaved his way around several Cougar defenders before blasting a ball past the keeper to up the lead to 4-2.
The four goals matched the second highest scoring output of the season for Carolina as the Tar Heels also posted four goals against James Madison.
Billy Schuler set a new single-season career high in the win when he found the back of the net for the 10th time Friday night. Schuler joins Martinez as the last two Tar Heels to reach 10 goals in a season as Martinez accomplished the feat in 2010.
Next up for the Tar Heels is an inter-state affair with Davidson Monday night as Carolina will open the week will follow up with a visit from No. 3 Maryland on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
