CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Blue Team jumped out to an 8-1 lead after five innings Saturday night but the White Team responded with a five-run sixth before freshman Mason McCullough closed out the 11-6 win for the Blue Team. With the second series of the Fall World Series tied at 1-1 the teams will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Blue Team jumped all over starter R.C. Orlan pushing three runs across in the first inning thanks to run producing hits from Colin Moran and Cody Stubbs along with a fielder's choice from Mike Zolk.
Moran added another RBI in the second inning when he registered a sacrifice fly to left field to score Chaz Frank who tallied a one-out single and moved to third on a double from senior catcher Jacob Stallings.
The White Team finally solved freshman starter Benton Moss in the bottom half of the third inning as they were able to take advantage of a lead off walk. Jeff Bouton swiped second base after the free pass and scored with ease when Tommy Coyle raked a single into right field to cut the Blue Team's lead to 4-1.
The Blue Team struck for two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to extend its lead to 8-1. Cody Stubbs crushed a 3-0 offering in the fourth inning for a two-run home run down the right field line and Chaz Frank drove in a pair with a RBI single in the fifth.
The White Team broke through in the bottom half of the sixth pushing across five runs in the inning to pull within two runs at 8-6.
Michael Russell started the scoring off with a RBI double before Parks Jordan and Jeff Bouton each added RBI singles.
Shell McCain and Tommy Coyle kept the rally going with a pair of RBI singles to pull with two runs at 8-6 before the Blue Team was forced to go to the bullpen.
Freshman right-hander Mason McCullough came on and struck out Seth Baldwin looking to get out of the jam.
Adam Griffin helped add to the Blue Team's lead in the top of the eighth with a two-run double just inside the first base bag to stretch the lead to 11-6. McCullough would pick up the final three outs of the eighth for the save as the Blue Team evened the second series 1-1.
The Blue Team will have a chance to clinch the Fall World Series on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they have a chance to win the second series. If the White Team claims game six of the Fall World Series the teams will play Tuesday to decide the winner.
