Meg Morris, a sophomore defender on the 2011 University of North Carolina women's soccer team, has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for October 10-16, 2011, after leading UNC to a pair of shutouts over Top 5-ranked teams.
This week's nominees were:
Meg Morris
Women's Soccer
Sophomore
Defender
Montclair, N.J.
Sophomore defender Meg Morris led a North Carolina defensive effort which recorded back-to-back shutouts against the nation's No. 3 and No. 4 teams, Duke and Wake Forest, respectively, as Carolina went 1-0-1 on the week, defeating Duke 1-0 and tying Wake Forest 0-0. UNC's two opponents combined for only eight shots on goals in the two games and particularly against Duke she was effective against Duke star Mollie Pathman, limiting her to one shot in the match. Morris, who early in the season was limited by a knee injury, played all but 14 minutes over the weekend. Her dangerous runs also helped the Tar Heels' offense. Morris and her defensive mates have limited UNC opponents to only three goals in seven ACC games to date.
SAMANTHA TRAVERS
Field Hockey
Redshirt Freshman
Forward
Harare, Zimbabwe
Samantha Travers scored two goals and added an assist as UNC won 7-2 at Virginia on Saturday to improve to 4-0 in ACC play. All of her points came in the first half as Carolina rolled to a 5-0 halftime lead. Travers has come off the bench in all 16 games this season and ranks second on the team in scoring with 25 points on 11 goals (tied for second on the team) and three assists. Following a pair of road wins over the weekend -- the team also won 3-0 at James Madison on Sunday -- UNC is 15-1 on the year.
