UNC Sweeps Doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina began its fall schedule with two victories, defeating Campbell 20-0 and UNCG 9-1 Saturday from Dail Stadium.

Kelli Wheeler led off the first inning with a line drive to left field. After an Amy Nece strikeout, the Tar Heels drew three consecutive walks before Jordan Scarboro unleashed a base-clearing triple down the left field line.
Lori Spingola started in the circle for Carolina and struck out the side in the second frame. The sophomore right-hander went four innings, fanned six batters and surrendered no runs.
The offense continued to roll in the third with Tisha Mahon starting the inning with a single through the 3-4 hole, followed by Wheeler drawing a walk. Nece then reached on a Camels' error before Ally Blake hit a rocket off the fence in left field to bring two runner homes. True freshman Kenna Kelly then came up huge, crushing her first career home run to right field, scoring to more runs. Scarboro and Kelsey Green then reached base and were brought home by another freshman, Stephanie Krider, who nailed a base-clearing double to left-center.
The Tar Heel tacked on three more runs in the fourth, highlighted by line drives from Wheeler, Blake and Haliegh Dickey.
Lauren Walker relieved Spingola to close out the game with two strikeouts, three walks and a fly out.

Mahon singled up the middle to begin the first inning before Blake lined a ball to the left field fence. Kelly then reached first on a fielder's choice. First baseman Haleigh Dickey followed that up with a monster home run to right center.
Sophomore Sara Buchholz took the circle for UNC. A bunt single caught the Tar Heel defense off guard but Miami, Fla., native closed out of the opening frame by striking out the fourth and fifth batters.
UNC added a run in the top of the third. Blake led off with a shot to the right center gap for a double. Kelly and Dickey drew bases on balls to bring Blake home on a passed ball.
Buchholz found her groove in the third en route to striking out the side. The sophomore right-hander registered six strikeouts.
Kelly started off the fifth with a liner to center field and stole second base shortly thereafter. Ashley Bone then came in to pinch hit for Buchholz and brought in Kelly with a double to right field. Redshirt junior Megan Morrison ended the game on a base-clearing double per the seven-run rule.
