Bryn Renner Named Tar Heel Perfomer of the Week

Bryn Renner, UNC's sophomore quarterback, has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for October 24-30, 2011, copping the honor for the second time during the 2011-12 school year, after having a career day in leading Carolina past Wake Forest 49-24 to attain bowl eligibility for the 2011 squad.

Sophomore quarterback Bryn Renner was 21 for 28 for a career-high 338 yards and three touchdowns, his first career 300-yard passing game (previous high was 288 yards vs. Miami), in Carolina's 49-24 victory over Wake Forest. It was his second game this year with at least three touchdown passes (had four at East Carolina). The 338 yards passing by Renner are the 13th-most in a game by a Tar Heel and the second-most ever by a Tar Heel against Wake Forest (Darian Durant had 361 against the Deacs in 2001). Renner has completed 168 of 231 pass attempts this year for 2,195 yards, 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He has completed 72.7 percent of his pass attempts. He is tied for second in touchdown passes in a season by a Tar Heel (record is 23 by Chris Keldorf in 1996, TJ Yates also had 19 in 2010). The completions and yardage are ninth-most in a season. No Tar Heel with at least 100 attempts has ever completed 70 percent of his passes in a season.

illy Schuler opened the week with a goal and an assist at No. 25 South Carolina as he helped lead the Tar Heels to a 4-0 win over the rival Gamecocks. The multi-point game was Schuler's third of the year as he converted a penalty to up UNC's lead to 3-0 before distributing an assist on a goal from Ben Speas. The Allentown, N.J., native followed up that performance by breaking through for his sixth game winner of the year and now leads the Tar Heels in points with 27 on the year thanks to a team-high 12 goals and three assists. The game winner against the Wolfpack was Schuler's 25th career goal and is now just three goals shy of entering the career top 10 at UNC after only three full seasons.

Falgowski was part of two major wins over the weekend. On Friday, she helped the U.S. to a gold medal - and an automatic berth in the 2012 Summer Olympics - at the Pan American Games in Mexico. She flew back to the States on Saturday and met her UNC teammates in Norfolk, Va., for Sunday's matchup with top-ranked Old Dominion. The second-ranked Tar Heels beat the host Lady Monarchs 3-2 in overtime, with Falgowski assisting on the game-winning goal by Caitlin Van Sickle. The assist moved Falgowski into a tie for first on UNC's career list with 58.

Steve Cebertowicz won two individual events and led off UNC's victorious 200 freestyle relay to help North Carolina defeat Virginia Tech 165-135. Cebertowicz was the only three event winner in the meet and his victories in the middle of the meet in the 50 free in 20.93 and the 100 free in 45.02 helped the Tar Heels pull out to the lead for good against the Hokies. Cebertowicz then had the fastest leadoff split in the 200 free relay in leading the Tar Heels to victory in that event. Cebertowicz led off the relay in 20.71.

Stephanie Peacock won three individual events and swam on UNC's victorious 200-yard freestyle relay in leading the Tar Heels to a 190-110 win at Virginia Tech. Peacock won the 1650-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B" time of 16:14.61, more than 25 seconds faster than her previous career best of 16:39.78. Her time on Friday was fast enough to have qualified her for last year's NCAA Championships in the event. After swimming a mile, Peacock came back an event later and wont he 200 free in 1:49.00. She also won the 500 free later in the meet in 4:49.02.
