Chapel Hill, N.C. - Five home meets and a road contest at defending national champion Alabama highlight the 2012 University of North Carolina gymnastics schedule. This marks the first time since 2006 Carolina has had five home meets and head coach Derek Galvin is excited for the opportunity to play host.
"This is a great schedule for our team and our fans," said Galvin, entering his 31st year as UNC's gymnastics coach. "Our team is working hard to prepare for the 2012 season and there is nothing better than competing in front of a big crowd at Carmichael Arena. We also are excited about our road meets, which include trips to perennial powers Alabama and Penn State."
Carolina's home schedule features meets against William & Mary (Jan. 29), Maryland (Feb. 12), Temple (Feb. 17), George Washington (Feb. 24) and Ohio State (March 10). Carolina conducts its home meets at Carmichael Arena, which was recently renovated to include individual chairback seats in the entire lower level and upgraded offices for the gymnastics program.
Carolina opens the 2012 campaign at the George Washington Invitational, an event the Tar Heels have won nine consecutive years. The remaining road slate includes Maryland (Feb. 5), Penn State and Michigan (March 2) and Alabama (March 16). The Crimson Tide won last season's national championship and are expected to be among the nation's elite once again.
The postseason begins March 24 with the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) championships, which will be held on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. NCAA competition will begin on April 7 and the Tar Heels will be looking for their 11th consecutive regional bid.
