Ben Speas Nabs Tar Heel Performer of the Week Accolade

Ben Speas, the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 ACC Men's Soccer Tournament, has garnered Tar Heel Performer of the Week honors for November 7-13, 2011. Speas scored two goals and added an assist in the championship match against Boston College, leading UNC to its first tournament crown since 2000.

Junior forward Ben Speas helped lead the No. 3 Tar Heels to their third ACC Tournament title in school history Sunday as he tallied a pair of goals and added an assist in UNC's 3-1 win over Boston College. Speas opened the scoring Sunday afternoon as he volleyed a ball far post that Carlos McCrary put a head on to put Carolina in front. The Stow, Ohio, native put the Tar Heels on a 2-0 lead when he sent a free kick from 40 yards out into the box that was able to sneak past the goalkeeper. Speas would add his fourth goal of the year in the second half when he finished off a cross from Billy Schuler to put Carolina in front 3-1 and lock up the 2011 ACC Championship.

Senior forward Laura Broomfield notched a pair of double-doubles in Carolina's opening weekend wins over Gardner-Webb and USC Upstate. Broomfield had 15 points and 14 rebounds against defending Big South champion Gardner-Webb, adding four blocks and three steals. She also had a second double-double with 13 points and 10 boards against Upstate and averaged 14.0 points and 12.0 rebounds in just 41 total minutes over two games.

McFarlane had a goal and an assist as third-seeded North Carolina defeated Colonial Athletic Association champion William and Mary 4-1 in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. McFarlane scored her second goal of the season on a header in the 74th minute to put the Tar Heels up 3-1 and then assisted on Courtney Jones' tally in the 86th minute to put the game away for the Tar Heels.

Kendra Schaaf won the NCAA Southeast Regional title Saturday and led the women's cross country team to a third-place finish. Schaaf, who took second at the meet in 2010, was in the lead pack the entire race and took first in the 6k distance with a time of 19:52.9-- more than 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Schaaf earns All-Region honors with her finish and qualifies to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships next Monday, Nov. 21, in Terre Haute, Ind.

Jake Hurysz took seventh to lead the Carolina men's cross country team to their highest finish ever at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships Saturday. Hurysz finished seventh in the 10k race in a time of 30:11, earning All-Region honors and helping the Tar Heels take fifth overall. With his top finish, Huyrsz becomes the first male from Carolina to qualify for the NCAA Championships since All-America John Klein qualified in 1997.

Kolojejchick, a junior midfielder, scored twice as No. 1 UNC beat No. 8 Michigan 5-1 in an NCAA Tournament second round game on Sunday to advance to the final four for the third year in a row and the 16th time in program history. Kolojejchick's first goal was the 50th of her career and moved her into 10th place on UNC's all-time goals and points list. She leads the team this season in goals with 21.
