Carolina Announces 2012 Men's Tennis Schedule

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina will play one of the most challenging schedules in NCAA Division I in 2012 Tar Heel head men's tennis coach Sam Paul announced on Wednesday. Fourteen of UNC's 20 dual matches will be against teams that qualified for the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
Those opponents include 2011 NCAA finalist Virginia; semifinalist Ohio State; quarterfinalist Stanford; Round of 16 participants Tulsa, Illinois, Georgia Tech and Duke; second round participants Texas, Auburn, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Miami and Maryland; and 2011 qualifier Florida State.
The Tar Heels will play in six tournaments during the spring season: the Duke Invitational January 14-16; the National Team Indoors Regionals Janaury 29-30; the National Team Indoors February 17-20; the ACC Tournament April 19-22; the NCAA Regionals May 11-13; and the NCAA Championships May 18-28.
Dual match action begins January 21 and 22 when the Tar Heels play back-to-back matches against Stanford and Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla. The Tar Heels will play their home opener on Sun., Feb. 5 against Texas at noon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The veteran Tar Heels will travel to Hawai'i over spring break to play both Hawai'i Pacific and the University of Hawai'i.
After opening the ACC season at Boston College on Leap Day, UNC will play six successive home ACC matches beginning March 16 against Wake Forest before finishing its season with four straight ACC road matches.
The Tar Heels return a large and veteran senior class for the 2012 campaign that include five players with past starting experience -- Joey Burkhardt, Cameron Ahari, Alex Rafiee, Zach Hunter and Brennan Boyajian. Junior Jose Hernandez and William Parker also return with starting experience. Hernandez was a 2011 first-team All-America.
