Dwight Jones Named Tar Heel Performer Of The Week

For the second time this fall Dwight Jones of the UNC football team has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week, earning honors for November 21-27, 2011. Jones' stellar performance helped Carolina beat Duke, retaining the Victory Bell for the eighth straight year and the 21st time in the last 22 years.

Senior wide receiver Dwight Jones had 10 catches for 101 yards in Carolina's 37-21 win over Duke. He eclipsed the previous UNC single-season record for receptions and finished the game with 79 catches on the year. The previous mark of 74 was set by Hakeem Nicks in 2007. It was his fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season, tying the school record set by Nicks in 2008. Jones had touchdown catches of 6, 18 and 8 yards and became the first Tar Heel to catch three scoring receptions in a game since Nicks vs. Boston College in 2008. Jones has 11 touchdown catches this season, the second-highest single-season total in school history, just one shy of Nicks' record of 12 in 2008.

illy Schuler corralled a free ball just outside the box and slotted a shot past the Indiana goalkeeper to propel the Tar Heels into the Elite Eight for the fourth straight year in Sunday's 1-0 win. Schuler's goal was his 15th of the year as he moved into a tie for eighth place on school single season goal list. Eight of Schuler's 15 goals have been of the game-winning variety, while three of those game winners have come in extra time as the Allentown, N.J., native beat NC State (Oct. 28) during the regular season and Virginia (Nov. 11) in the ACC Tournament before the overtime strike against Indiana Sunday.

Had 37 assists and only seven turnovers in Carolina's three games this week (2-1). Averaged 12.3 assists in the three games. Set UNC records for most assists in two, four and five consecutive games. Had 15 assists in win over Tennessee State, 14 assists and a career-high six steals in win over South Carolina and eight assists in loss to UNLV. Earned all-tournament honors in the Las Vegas Invitational.

Chay Shegog notched a pair of double-doubles in wins over Presbyterian College and Kennesaw State. Shegog had her first two career 20+ point games in back-to-back outings, including a career-best 23 points against PC and 21 against Kennesaw. The Stafford, Va., senior also tallied a career-high five steals in the win over PC and logged a team-high 38 minutes against Kennesaw on Sunday due to only eight Tar Heel players and one other post player being available. Shegog shot almost 63 percent from the field over the two games as she led the Tar Heels to a 5-0 start and their 54thand 55th straight win in November.
