No. 25 UNC Tops Bethune Cookman 7-2

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- Freshman Lori Spingola pitched four shutout innings assisting No. 25 North Carolina to a 7-2 win over Bethune Cookman Sunday afternoon at Jacksonville University Softball Complex. Classmate Jordan Scarboro registered a hit and two RBI improving UNC to 4-1 on the young season.
Spingola (4-1) posted seven strikeouts in four shutout innings of work. The Atlanta, Ga., native allowed just one hit and three total base runners in just her fourth career start. Sara Buchholz pitched two innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on two hits. Fellow freshman Ashley Bone pitched the final frame in her first collegiate appearance in the circle.
Chelsey Butler and Haleigh Dickey posted two hits apiece to pace the 10-hit attack for Carolina. Kelli Wheeler, Tisha Mahon, Megan Morrison, Brittany Robinson and Cara Vitale all added a hit apiece to round out the UNC offense.
Carolina scored two runs on four hits in the second inning. Wheeler leadoff the frame with a single to right and later advanced to third on a throwing error. Dickey knocked in Wheeler with a RBI double to right center. Robinson followed with a RBI double down the left field line. The Tar Heels owned a 2-0 lead after the first two frames.
Spingola was strong in the circle early, notching five strikeouts in her the first three innings of work. The freshman allowed just one hit and two total base runners after three frames.
The Tar Heels tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. Butler registered a RBI single and Scarboro cranked a two-RBI double to highlight the big inning for UNC.
ethune Cookman got on the board in the sixth scoring two runs on two hits and one Tar Heel error. Sabrina Ferguson recorded a two-out single to bring home two Wildcats and chip away at the Carolina lead.
UNC added a pair of runs in the seventh innings to stretch their lead to 7-2. Ally Blake notched a RBI groundout to score Mahon while freshman Amy Nece crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
one tossed a scoreless seventh inning to secure the 7-2 win.
Carolina will return to action next Saturday traveling to No. 5 Florida for a three-game set with the Gators.
