Marshall Named Tar Heel Performer Of The Week

Kendall Marshall of the University of North Carolina men's basketball team has been named the Tar Heel performer of the week for January 31-February 6, 2011. The week's nominees included:

Marshall had 22 assists and five turnovers combined in Carolina's two ACC wins this week. Had 16 assists against Florida State's No. 1 nationally ranked defense. The 16 assists are a UNC freshman record for assists in any game and the most assists ever by a Tar Heel in an ACC game (includes 948 career regular season and Tournament games). They are the fourth-most by a Tar Heel in any game and the third-most by an ACC freshman in a game. Played a season-high 36 minutes against the Seminoles and scored nine points (tying his ACC best), hit a season-high two three-pointers and had three steals. Helped Carolina score 89 points (most against FSU since 2008) and shoot 55.7 percent from the floor for the game (no team had shot better than 47.2 percent against FSU this year). Also had six assists in Carolina's 106-74 win at Boston College as the Tar Heels shot 57.4 percent from the floor. In the two games, Carolina shot 73 of 129 from the floor (56.6 percent), including 37 of 62 (59.7 percent) in the second half. Carolina had a two-game assist-error ratio of 50 assists and only 20 turnovers.

Leading scorer for both teams in each of Carolina's ACC wins this week. Had a game-high and career-best 26 points in the 106-74 win at Boston College and a game-high 17 points and a season-high tying 10 rebounds in the 89-69 win against Florida State. Made 9 of 15 shots, 4 of 7 from three-point range, in the win over the Eagles. Was 7 for 15 against the Seminoles. For the week, Barnes averaged 21.5 points and 8.0 rebounds and shot 16 for 30 from the floor (50 percent) and 6 of 14 from three-point range.

Freshman Dan O'Connor recorded four career best times in a dual meet win over arch-rival Duke and in the College Cup Invitational at Duke over the weekend. He broke the Duke University pool record Sunday in both the 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyles at 9:06.26 and 15:05.98, respectively. Those times now place him third and fourth in UNC history in those two events. O'Connor's previous best times were 9:11.66 in the 1000 and 15:26.89 in the 1650. In the dual meet against Duke, O'Connor won the 500 free in 4:23.62, another NCAA B qualifying time and almost four seconds better than his previous career best which had been 4:27.25.

Sophomore Jackie Rudolph had a career weekend, posting four career best times as the Tar Heels beat Duke in dual meet action and also competed in the College Cup Invitational at Duke. Rudolph went 4:47.75 in the 500-yard freestyle, taking close to eight seconds off her career best. She also went a career best 1:52.18 in the 200-yard freestyle in the College Cup, more than a second better than her previous career best which was 1:53.46. Rudolph saved her best for last, setting Duke University pool records in the 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyles Sunday, going 9:53.46 and 16:24.61 (previous career bests were 9:56.05 and 16:39.75). She now ranks eighth, ninth and eighth in UNC history respectively in the 500, 1000 and 1650 yard freestyles.
