GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina junior attackman Thomas Wood and Virginia senior goalkeeper Adam Ghitelman have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the period ending on Monday, March 14.
Wood earned a Capital One/ESPN Impact Performer of the Week nod on Sunday after impressive performances last week, in which the junior led his 15th-ranked Tar Heels to wins over two Top 10 Ivy League teams. In North Carolina's victory over previously undefeated and ninth-ranked Penn, the Dallas, Texas, native scored three goals and scooped up three ground balls. Penn had not allowed more than six goals in a game all season; however, Wood scored just 17 seconds into the match and went on to score twice more in the opening quarter, giving the Heels a 6-1 lead after just 15 minutes en route to the 12-6 win. Wood was also brilliant against seventh-ranked Princeton, scoring three goals and adding an assist and two ground balls. Wood scored to give the Heels the lead for good at 4-3 with 6:31 in the second quarter. He then scored back-to-back goals to open the third quarter, including the eventual game-winner at 13:05. After Princeton pulled within 7-5, Wood assisted teammate Ducan Hucthins' goal 26 seconds into the fourth quarter, halting any Princeton hope for a comeback.
ACC Men's Lacrosse action continues on Thursday, March 17, as the classic in-state battle of North Carolina and Duke takes place in Chapel Hill. The game, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m., will be televised on ESPNU.
