The University of North Carolina gymnastics team will face off against William & Mary for the second time this season on Saturday, March 5, at 2 p.m. The Tar Heels won the first meeting between the teams by a convincing margin of 193.325 to 188.550.
"It's the final home meet, it's going to be an emotional meet for Teri Diamond, our senior," said Head Coach Derek Galvin. "The whole team is training really well this week. The team is well prepared for strong competition. Our objective in this meet is to have a strong effort from our team and have more balance. We had a very strong performance on balance beam last week; we want that same level on each of the four events," said Galvin.
In the past two meets, Carolina has set team-high scores. They will need to have strong finishes on each event to sweep the senior-led Tribe for the season.
"We did a home and away with them this year; we were up there in January," said Galvin. "They have some strong individuals and they have five seniors on their team so they are experienced. I think we will have the advantage in terms of team depth."
It will be both the last home meet for the Tar Heels and redshirt senior Teri Diamond. Diamond has served as a captain throughout this season and has been a mainstay on bars.
"Teri has done an exceptional job this year as a leader of this team," said Galvin. "I think she has been one of the most effective leaders we've had over the years. It's been a real joy to see her gymnastics continue to improve as the season progresses. She faced a number of injuries throughout her career but she has continued to push through all of those things. Her skills and performance level on bars is the strongest its been since she has been here at Carolina."
"I really can't imagine what this year would have been like without her as a leader. I've very thankful that she was given the opportunity to stay for a fifth year. And I'm so thankful she chose to come back for that year because she has really been an exceptional leader on the team."
