WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Sam Paul recorded his 300th victory as head coach of North Carolina as his Heels defeated Wake Forest 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Winston-Salem's Hanes Park.
With the win, No. 22 North Carolina (7-4) moves to 2-0 in the ACC after two crucial road victories over in-state rivals. No. 34 Wake Forest drops to 6-6 (0-2 ACC). Paul was pleased with his team's play.
"It was a great win for us today," Paul said. "To beat a good team like Wake Forest on their home court is just great. It's been a good weekend for our guys."
North Carolina looks to have found their groove in doubles, clinching the point for the second time in as many matches behind wins at No. 1 and 3. Brennan Boyajian and Jose Hernandez, ranked No. 22 nationally, took out Danny Kreyman and Jonathan Wolff 8-4 at No. 1. Cameron Ahari and William Parker clinched the point with an 8-6 win over Tripper Carleton and Adam Lee down at No. 3.
Iain Atkinson brought the Demon Deacons level in the match when he beat Stefan Hardy at No. 3, but it was all North Carolina from there. Boyajian continued his impressive play in the two spot with a resounding 6-2, 6-2 upset of No. 70 Jonathan Wolff. His doubles teammate Hernandez, ranked 35th, followed with a victory of his own at the top flight, dispatching No. 88 Tripper Carleton 6-4, 6-4.
William Parker, who faltered Friday against N.C. State, returned to his winning ways with his match-clinching win at No. 5 over Adam Lee.
After a full weekend, the Tar Heels will have a few days rest before they welcome the No. 48 Maryland Terrapins (9-3, 1-2 ACC) on Friday, Mar. 25 at 3 p.m. from the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. Paul encouraged fans to come out and support his Heels, who are currently sporting a four-match win streak.
"We're really looking forward to seeing Maryland at home," Paul said. "We're just excited to get out and play in front of our fans."
