Tar Heels Stay Perfect In ACC With Win Over Terrapins

CHAPEL HILL - The No. 15 North Carolina men's tennis team won its fifth straight match Friday, defeating No. 43 Maryland 6-1 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels move to 8-4 and are a perfect 3-0 on the young ACC season. Maryland drops to 9-6 (1-3 in the ACC).
It was a nervy start in doubles, as the two schools split the first two matches at No. 2 and 3. Fifty-ninth ranked Joey Burkhardt and Stefan Hardy took out John Collins and Tommy Laine at No. 2, 8-4, but Maryland answered with a win of their own in the third flight. Jose Hernandez and Brennan Boyajian, ranked No. 22 by the ITA, were taken the distance at No. 1 doubles, up only 7-6 before Hernandez eventually clinched the point for the Tar Heels with some clutch serving in the final game.
Hardy, the hot man for the Tar Heels in recent matches, again made quick work of his opponent at No. 3 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1 to put North Carolina in the driver's seat. Boyajian then beat Sergio Wyss at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1 and the rout was on. Maryland managed to pull back a point with a victory at No. 6, but never got any closer as William Parker clinched the match for the second consecutive match with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the fifth flight.
After the match was decided, No. 35 Hernandez finished off Horny, ranked No. 75, in the first flight, 6-4, 7-6(2). Joey Burkhardt, No. 103, also got back into the win column in singles with a three set thriller, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Coach Paul was pleased with his team, who are enjoying their highest ranking since 2008, and their effort.
"We fought hard today, really proud of our effort and now it's a matter of getting ready for Boston College on Sunday," Paul said.
North Carolina will look to defend its undefeated ACC record this Sunday, March 27 against Boston College at 1 p.m. from the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
