Tar Heels Improve To 2-0 In Spring Season

RALEIGH, N.C. - Billy Schuler, Enzo Martinez and Kirk Urso all notched two goals apiece as the North Carolina men's soccer squad bested the visiting Winnipeg Jets Saturday at the WRAL Soccer Complex in Raleigh, N.C. The action was the first of the spring season for Schuler after missing the majority of the 2010 season due to a shoulder injury. Carolina will return to action Wednesday, March 30 at 6 p.m. when it takes on the Carolina RailHawks at the WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an impressive 3-0 lead after the opening 45 minutes before outscoring Winnipeg 3-2 in the second half.
Brendan Moore went the full 90 for Carolina in net, while the back line featured a mix of veterans and newcomers throughout the match. January enrollees freshman Jordan McCrary and rising senior Matt Hedges were joined by rising senior Drew McKinney and redshirt freshman Glen Long. At the half, Anton Sealey came on for Drew McKinney and Matt Rose replaced Glen Long, while in the 60th minute C.J. Odenigwe came on to replace Matt Hedges.
The midfielders and forwards were all returning players as Kirk Urso, Enzo Martinez, Jordan Gafa, Billy Schuler, Martin Murphy and Robbie Lovejoy picked up the starts. In the 60th minute Carlos McCrary came on for Schuler after he netted a pair of goals.
Freshmen David Walden and Bruno Castro also came on in the 60th to replace Martinez and Lovejoy, respectively.
Schuler showed no signs of the injury that cost him all but two games of his 2010 campaign as he netted a pair of goals in the win.
