USA Finishes Third At World University Games

The North Carolina women's golf team started strong at the Bryan National Collegiate and is in third place after first-round play. The Tar Heels fired a 7-over-par 295 and were led by junior Catherine O'Donnell who fired a 1-over 73 on Friday.

O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., is tied for 10th place after carding a 73, just three stokes behind the two co-leaders. Her round included four birdies and five bogies along with nine pars. Three of her Tar Heel teammates are another shot back in a tie for 15th place after carding a 2-over 74 - junior Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio; and two freshmen, Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., and Casey Grice, from College Station, Texas. Courtney Gunter, a sophomore from Matthews, N.C., shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 33rd place. Another sophomore, Michelle Ahn, from Chapel Hill, is playing as an individual and is tied for 65th after shooting an 80.

Tennessee grabbled the lead over the 17-team field by firing an even-par 288 total. Wake Forest is in second place at 6-over 294 and the Tar Heels are another shot back in third place at 295. Virginia is in fourth place at 296 while Vanderbilt is fifth at 299 and Duke is sixth at 301.

Erica Popson of Tennessee and Michelle Shin of Wake Forest are tied for the individual lead as both players shot 2-under-par 70. Laura Anderson of Louisville is alone in third place at 1-under 71 while six players are tied for fourth place at even-par 72. Tar Heel O'Donnell is one of five tied for 10th at 73 while 12 players, including three Tar Heels, are tied for 15th at 74.

The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at Bryan Park Champions Course which features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
