The North Carolina women's golf team is in first place after round one of the 2011 ACC Championships played at Sedgefield Country Club. The Tar Heels fired an impressive 5-over-par 289 and were led by junior Allie White.
White, from Lancaster, Ohio, played some impeccable golf. Her three bogeys and eight birdies put her in first place at 5-under 66. White's score is tied with the low score of round one at the championship played at Sedgefield Country Club. Natalie Sheary of Wake Forest shot the same score in the 2009 ACC Championships at Sedgefield. Freshman Katherine Perry showed her inexperience with Sedgefield Country Club was not an issue. On the par-5 18th hole Perry hit her 5-wood onto the putting green and sank a 15-foot putt for an eagle. Perry, from Cary, N.C, is tied for third at even par 71. White, Casey Grice and Jackie Chang had success on the 18th too, all three birdying the hole. Grice, a freshman from College Station, Tex., and Chang, a freshman from Paradise Valley, Ariz., both posted 6-over 77 and are tied for 30th. Catherine O'Donnell, the junior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., carded a 4-over 75 and is tied for 16th.
Head coach Jann Mann said the team played some very smart golf given the difficulty of the course. "They hit the shots around the green that they needed to hit and they played with the level of confidence they certainly needed," said Mann. "I was very pleased with how they handled themselves today and hopefully they are able to keep it up for the next two rounds."
The Tar Heels lead the field at 5-over 289. Tied for second are Virginia and Florida State at 11-over 295. Wake Forest is alone in fourth at 12-over 296, Duke sits in fifth at 13-over 297 and Maryland is by itself in sixth at 14-over 298. Four strokes back in seventh is Miami at 18-over 302 and North Carolina State is nine strokes behind the Hurricanes in eighth at 27-over 211. Boston College completes the field at 30-over 314.
Carolina's White is the individual leader after posting a 5-under 66 and Wake Forest's Cheyenne Woods is in second at 1-under 70. Jessie Hollandsworth of Maryland, Perry of North Carolina and Sheary of Wake Forest are tied for third at even par 71.
