WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite competitive times from the North Carolina rowing team, Georgetown swept all five races Saturday as the two schools competed on the Potomac River.
"I give credit to Georgetown - they're definitely a fast crew this year," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We raced pretty well. There are some things that we definitely can work on as far as maintaining our composure and maximizing our sprint, but Georgetown is just faster than we are right now. "
The day started with a race between UNC's second novice eight and Georgetown's fourth varsity eight. The Hoyas won with a time of 6:51.0, to Carolina's 6:55.6.
Next was Georgetown's third varsity eight beating UNC's novice eight in a time of 6:37.6. Carolina finished in 6:48.1.
Georgetown's lightweight eight raced against the second varsity eights, winning that race in a time of 6:13.0. The Hoyas' second varsity eight was next in 6:20.4, and UNC was third in 6:24.2.
In the varsity eight race, which determines the winner of the Class of 2006 Cup, Georgetown finished in 6:12.5, with UNC second in 6:14.4.
In the varsity four, Georgetown won in 7:09.6, followed by UNC in 7:18.5. GU's lightweight four was third in 7:21.1.
The racing was UNC's second competition of the spring, following last Saturday's action, in which Carolina swept all four races against George Mason and West Virginia in Raleigh. After next weekend with an open date, the Tar Heels head north to compete at the Knecht Cup on April 9-10 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
"Although we're disappointed with the results we're not disappointed with what we did today," Haney said. "Hopefully we'll pick it back up and continue our success from last weekend as we head to New Jersey."
