LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA --- Sara Buchholz tossed a complete-game to lead North Carolina over Temple 8-3 Friday afternoon in game two of the Citrus Classic. Haleigh Dickey and Kelsey Green each posted two hits and two RBI improving UNC to 12-6.
uchholz (3-2) allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings of work. The Miami, Fla., native struck out four in her longest outing of her freshmen season.
UNC uncorked eight runs on 13 hits paced by Dickey and Green. Tisha Mahon, Chelsey Butler and Brittany Robinson all added two hits apiece. Ally Blake notched a hit and RBI, along with Kelli Wheeler who posted one hit and scored two runs. Brittany McKinney registered a double to round out the Carolina attack.
The Owls got on the board in the first inning scoring two runs on two hits. Sarah Prezioso belted a two-run home run over the right field fence to give Temple an early 2-0 lead.
Carolina answered manufacturing four runs on three hits and one Temple error. Dickey knocked in three Tar Heels with a two-RBI single to left center and another Tar Heel scored on a Temple error. Green then ripped a two-out RBI single into the right center field gap to score Dickey. UNC owned a 4-2 lead after one frame of play.
The Tar Heels stretched their lead to 6-2 in the third frame. Green knocked in pinch-runner Amy Nece with a RBI single into center field. A bases loaded walk issued to Blake scored another Tar Heel in the bottom of the third.
A solo home run off the bat off Crystal Nyman inched Temple back at 6-3 in the top of the fourth. Carolina answered tacking on another run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single off the bat of Robinson. The senior knocked in pinch-runner Dani Manko after classmate McKinney reached on a double. Carolina led 7-3 over Temple after five frames of play.
The Tar Heels added another in the fifth frame, scoring for the third consecutive inning. Blake knocked in Wheeler on a deep RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Buchholz continued to preserve the lead limiting Temple to no runs in the final three frames.
Carolina will challenge Notre Dame at 11:30 a.m. Saturday live on ESPN3.com. The Tar Heels will play Long Island at 3 p.m. in their fourth game of the 2011 Citrus Classic later Saturday afternoon.
