This tournament has a different format than most college events - one that promotes a "team" atmosphere. All five competitors from each school are playing together as opposed to one player from three schools playing together. A team's score for each hole is determined by the low four scores on that hole. The individual championship is still the player with the best relation-to-par score over 54 holes.
Purdue grabbed the first-round lead over the 23-team field with a 4-under 284 team total. Alabama is two strokes back in second place while Duke and Georgia are tied for third at 3-over 291. Florida State is alone in fifth place at 293 while four teams are tied for sixth at 294 - Arkansas, Auburn, Virginia and Wake Forest.
Aleja Cangrejo of Duke and Hannah Thomson of Florida State each fired a 2-under-par 70 to grab the first-round individual lead. Purdue's Numa Gulyanamitta is alone in third place one stroke back at 1-under 71 while four players are tied for fourth at even par 72 - Carolina's Grice, Kennesaw State's Hayley Cinning, Purdue's Laura Gonzalez and Arkansas' Emily Tubert.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at the University of Georgia which features a par 72, 6,335-yard layout. Live scoring is available throughout the event at www.golfstat.com.
