Tar Heels Race At Knecht Cup

The North Carolina rowing team raced at the Knecht Cup regatta on Saturday and Sunday in Cherry Hill, N.J., turning in competitive results in a large field. The top Tar Heel performances came from the varsity four and the novice eight.
The Carolina varsity four won its heat on Saturday in a time of 8:38.52 to advance to the afternoon semifinal. In the semifinal, UNC crossed sixth in 8:36.29 to make the third final on Sunday. In that race, the Tar Heels were second in 8:25.74, just behind New Hampshire in 8:19.66. The rest of the third final was UMass (8:34.03), Duquesne (8:35.40), Wisconsin lightweight (8:35.98) and LaSalle (8:51.58).
The novice eight was second in its Saturday heat in 7:45.38 to advance to the semifinal. In the semifinal, Carolina was first in 7:24.43, beating Miami (7:28.05), Villanova (7:29.05), Duke (7:33.51), Drexel (7:33.72) and Buffalo (7:54.47). That finish put the Tar Heels in the grand final on Sunday. The Tar Heels were sixth in that event in 7:29.95. Wisconsin lightweight won in 7:09.31.
UNC's varsity eight was fifth in its heat on Saturday in 7:23.42 and missed advancing to the semifinal. The competitive race also included two other ACC crews, Duke in first (7:07.19) and Miami in second (7:13.04). Temple was third (7:13.85) and UConn fourth (7:21.76).
The second varsity eight was fourth in its Saturday heat, in a time of 8:00.84, behind Wisconsin lightweight, Drexel and West Virginia. The first through third spots advanced to the semifinals.
Carolina's second novice eight was second in its Sunday final, crossing in 7:37.08 behind Kansas (7:29.43) and ahead of Fordham (8:49.14)
The UNC men's club team also competed at the event, winning the third final for the varsity eight and the petite final for the novice eight.
