UNC Meets Georgia Tech In ACC Showdown

CHAPEL HILL --- In search of their fifth straight ACC series win, North Carolina returns to league action Saturday traveling to No. 23 Georgia Tech for a three-game set at Mewborn Field. First pitch of the series is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader and will conclude Sunday at 1 p.m.

GEORGIA TECH SERIES NOTES
• Georgia Tech holds the advantage over UNC in the all-time series dating to 1981. The Tar Heels are 3-6 in the last nine meetings with the Yellow Jackets.
• 11 current Tar Heels have logged innings against Georgia Tech. Junior Ally Blake and senior Brittany Robinson have each homered against the Yellow Jackets in their careers.
• Carolina dropped three of four games to Georgia Tech in 2010. The Tar Heels split a doubleheader at home, dropped the series finale and were eliminated in the 2010 ACC Tournament by the Yellow Jackets.
• Four Tar Heels hail from the Peach State. Haleigh Dickey (Woodstock, Ga.), Logan Foulks (Douglasville, Ga.), Lori Spingola (Atlanta, Ga.) and Kelli Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) all will play in front of their home state this weekend. Assistant coach Kirin Kumar is an alum of Georgia Tech ('05) playing softball from 2002-2005 for the Yellow Jackets.
NOTING THE TAR HEELS
• UNC has won all four of their ACC series in 2011 this season. The three-game set at Georgia Tech is the second road series for the Tar Heels this season.
• The Tar Heels feature a balanced attack with a .279 team batting average, 2.52 staff ERA and a .960 fielding percentage.
• Carolina split a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro Wednesday, winning game one 4-1 and dropping game two 5-2.
• Freshman Lori Spingola leads UNC in the circle with a 21-11 mark, 1.66 ERA and 204 strikeouts to just 38 walks. Spingola's 21 wins are the fifth most in the country. Classmate Sara Buchholz owns a 3-0 record and 1.94 ERA in four ACC starts this season.
• At the plate, Kelli Wheeler leads UNC with a .429 batting average, five home runs and a .914 slugging percentage in 12 conference games. Sophomore Haleigh Dickey adds a pair of home runs and six RBI in league play.
NOTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
• No. 22 Georgia Tech dropped a 10-8 decision to No. 4 Georgia Wednesday, suffering their first home loss of 2011. The Yellow Jackets own the best record in the league with a 8-1 league mark, suffering their only league loss at Virginia Tech last weekend.
• The Yellow Jackets boast a .327 team batting average, 1.98 staff ERA and a .969 fielding percentage. Georgia Tech leads the country in home runs with 79 on the season. The 79 home runs are 30 more than any ACC team has hit in 2011.
• In the circle the duo of Kristin Adkins and Hope Rush pace the Yellow Jackets with a combined record of 27-8. The 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year Rush no-hit the Tar Heels twice last season.
• Offensively, five different Yellow Jackets have hit 10 or more home runs led by Kelsi Wesemen's 15 long balls.
