Chapel Hill, N.C. - University of North Carolina football signee Romar Morris was named the 2011 Athlete of the Year by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) at the organization's annual meeting Thursday at the Smith Center.
Morris was selected the winner by a select panel of media members. He joins a select group of Tar Heels that have won the award, including current UNC defensive lineman Kareem Martin, who won the award last year.
A native of Salisbury, N.C., Morris is a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and track. He is considered by most observers as the fastest football player in the state.
Morris is rated the No. 1 running back in North Carolina and the No. 19 overall prospect in the state by SuperPrep. As a senior, he rushed for 1,780 yards and 30 touchdowns and had 20 catches for 258 yards, and was named MVP of the NCHSAA 2-A state championship game.
An outstanding track athlete, Morris has run a 10.54 100-meter and 21.47 200-meter. He won back-to-back state 2-A titles in the 100 and 200m dashes and will be defending his titles this spring. In the winter, he won the state title in the 55-meter dash.
North Carolina signed Morris to a football scholarship in February.
