WALLACE, N.C. -
Katherine Perry, a rising sophomore on the University of North Carolina women's golf team, won the 62nd North Carolina Women's State Amateur Championship. The 54-hole event was played at River Landing Country Club which features a par 72, 5,992-yard layout.
Perry, from Cary, N.C., fired a 3-under-par 69 in Thursday's final round after carding 76-75 in the first two rounds. Her 4-over 220 total was nine strokes ahead of Katja Dammann's 229. Dammann, from Pinehurst, N.C., carded a 4-over 76 in the final round. Perry's final round included seven birdies which she attributed to a hot putter.
"I finally figured out the greens and I had 10 less putts - that helps," Perry said with a laugh.
This marked Perry's second time winning the North Carolina Women's State Amateur as she also captured the title in 2009 at Wilson Country Club in Wilson.
"It means a lot to me (to win a second time)," says Perry. "This is a very prestigious and historical championship and I'm honored."
The championship is conducted by the North Carolina Women's Golf Association (NCWGA). Next year's event will be played at Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club in Morganton.
