June 20, 2011
College World Series Game Five • UNC 3, Texas 0
Overall Team Notes
• With Monday's 3-0 win over Texas, Carolina improved to 15-18 all-time in CWS play, including a 13-10 record in the last five appearances (since 2006).
• UNC is now 7-2 in bracket-play elimination games over the last five years (four appearances) and 9-8 in CWS elimination games overall.
• With the win, the Tar Heels are now 87-57 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, 52-25 under Mike Fox and 39-13 in the postseason since the start of the 2006 tourney.
Team Notes
• Carolina converted two outfield double plays Monday for the first time in the Mike Fox era (since 1999). LF Chaz Frank doubled off Jonathan Walsh at first in the second inning and RF Seth Baldwin took out Mark Payton at second in the fourth.
Individual Notes
• Freshman Kent Emanuel became the first pitcher to throw a complete game shutout in the CWS since former Tar Heel and current assistant coach Robert Woodard threw nine scoreless innings to beat Clemson in 2006.
• Emanuel's 4-hit, 1-walk, 5-strikeout performance was also the first CWS shutout by a freshman since LSU's Brett Laxton against Wichita State in the 1993 title game.
• The complete-game shutout was the 78th in CWS history but just the fourth in the last 20 years.
• Emanuel improved to 3-0 in the NCAA Tournament with the victory and has allowed just one run and 16 hits over 23.0 postseason innings (0.39 ERA) with 15 strikeouts and just three walks. He is the only UNC freshman ever to notch more than one NCAA Tournament win.
• Senior OF Ben Bunting finished 4 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI double, marking his first four-hit game of the season and the fourth of his career.
• Bunting is now batting a team-best .452 (14 for 31) in the NCAA Tournament.
• With the four-hit performance, Bunting is now 11 for 22 (.500) with six runs scored in six career CWS games.
• Junior C Jacob Stallings reached base three times Monday (1 for 2, two walks) and drove in a pair of runs. Stallings is now 5 for 12 (.417) with four RBIs in five career CWS games.
