Hernandez Becomes 23rd All-America In UNC History

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Jose Hernandez, a sophomore from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has been named to the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association first-team All-America Team, becoming the 23rd Tar Heel in history to earn first-team All-America honors.
Hernandez qualified in singles play for the 2011 All-America Team after advancing to the Round of 16 in singles at the 2011 NCAA Championships and finishing 20th in the final ITA singles rankings, meeting two of the three criteria to be named All-America. Altogether, 41 players were named to the All-America team including 11 from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
As a sophomore, Hernandez finished with a brilliant 30-13 overall record, including a 16-7 dual match record and a 10-2 mark in ACC matches. He was 11-9 versus nationally-ranked players and 11-7 in matches against team ranked in the Top 50 nationally. He played all of his dual matches at No. 1 singles. He is now 34-12 in career dual match play after his first two seasons.
