Another successful summer league season is coming to a close for many Tar Heels this weekend as summer leagues throughout the country are crowning their champions. A pair of Tar Heel pitchers, Kent Emanuel and Andrew Smith, will hope to lead their Falmouth Commodores to the Cape Cod League title this weekend in the championship series.
Emanuel and Smith were two of nine Tar Heels to play in the prestigious Cape Cod League this summer. The duo and the Falmouth Commodores will take on the Harwich Mariners this weekend in the best-of-three championship series set to run Aug. 12-14.
A trio of Tar Heels were also in the Cape Cod League playoffs as well with infielders Colin Moran and Tommy Coyle along with pitcher R.C. Orlan helped the Bourne Braves earn a spot in the playoffs. The Braves exited the playoffs after back-to-back losses to Wareham.
The Chatham Anglers, a constant home for many Tar Heels, saw Chris Munnelly, Cody Penny and Matt Roberts all have successful summers in the Cape.
Cody Stiles posted the best numbers of any Tar Heel on the Cape for Cotuit as the rising junior did not allow a run over 10 innings of work and struck out nine.
Seven Tar Heels took part in the Coastal Plain League with three Tar Heels earning a trip to the postseason. Tim Brechbuehler and Chaz Frank were a member of the Thomasville Hi-Toms, while Tate Parrish earned a trip with the Asheboro Copperheads.
Also taking part in the Coastal Plain League were Jeff Bouton, Garrett Davis and Brian Holberton with the Wilson Tobs and Tom Zengel with the Outer Banks Daredevils.
Parks Jordan turned in the top offensive summer of any Tar Heels for the Baltimore Redbireds of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. Jordan posted a .333 average (25-75) to rank second on the team in 21 games of action. The rising sophomore scored 14 runs and drove in 11 more for the Redbirds who advanced to the Championship game.
Shane Taylor threw limited innings in the Northwoods League for the La Crosse Loggers.
