SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Junior Enzo Martinez found the back of the net in the 56th minute to propel No. 4 North Carolina past Wofford (2-4-1) Tuesday night in Spartanburg, S.C. The tally was Martinez' fourth of the season in helping the Tar Heels move to 6-1-0. Carolina continues its road swing with a trip to Charlottesville, Va. Friday to take on Virginia.
The Tar Heels played their game the majority of the night, controlling possession throughout and were able to breakthrough with the game's only goal in the 56th minute of the contest.
Enzo Martinez gathered a pass in the middle of the pitch in the attacking third and took on a charging defender at the top of the box. Martinez dropped a pass to his right where Billy Schuler was waiting.
Schuler beat the defender in front of him and laid off a pass to the middle of the box that Martinez ran onto and finished with a shot into the left side of the goal. The tally was the fourth of the year for Martinez as Schuler earned his second assist of the campaign.
The Tar Heels held tight at the back throughout the night as Wofford threatened on nearly every throw in thanks to Billy Padula. Padula would launch throws into the box each throw in the Tar Heel defensive third. Other than the throw ins the Tar Heel defense and possession game kept the Terriers in check.
Wofford appeared to get on the board in the 78th minute off of a throw in but Dennis Moore had assisted the ball into the goal thanks to a hand ball, earning a yellow card in the process.
Carolina controlled possession throughout the match but were unable to link up early on with the forwards. The Tar Heels turned it on in the second half creating nine shots in the second forty-five minutes.
The win gives Carolina its second straight shutout and its sixth win of the year.
Carolina continues its road swing on Friday when the Tar Heels return to conference play at Virginia.
