Chapel Hill, N.C.- Jacob Stallings' two-run home run to left in the fourth inning gave the Blue squad a 2-1 win over the Navy squad in a scrimmage that was shortened to five innings by rain on a sultry Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
Navy had taken a 1-0 lead in the third on a Cody Stubbs single up the middle that drove in Mike Zolk from second. With Parks Jordan on first via a bunt single in the top of the fourth, Jacob Stallings hit a no-doubter to left for the final 2-1 margin.
Each team had three hits and there were no errors committed. Andrew Smith, Cody Stiles and Tate Parrish were the only three pitchers that threw.
Rain started falling in the top of the fifth and got too heavy for the scrimmage to continue.
The next closed scrimmage will be this Sunday afternoon at the Bosh. TarHeelBlue will have exclusive coverage of all of Carolina's scrimmages.
The always-fun Fall World Series will begin on Monday, Oct. 10. There will be two best-of-three series. If a different squad each wins a series there will be a one game final for the title. All FWS games are free and open to the public.
Scrimmage Highlights: Jacob Stallings' home run to left was easily the day's biggest highlight. It was the third scrimmage home run of the Fall. Tommy Coyle and Tom Zengel had homered in previous scrimmages. Their home runs barely cleared the fence, but Stallings' homer easily cleared the fence in left.
Scrimmage Lowlight: The rain. Goodness knows we need it, but it wiped out Friday's entire scrimmage and half of Saturday's.
Coach Forbes comments: "Even though the scrimmage was only five innings, I saw some good things. I thought Smitty threw well. He threw too many balls but his stuff was really, really good. He got a lot of strikeouts, but he needs to improve his fast ball command. I thought Stiles threw outstanding.
"Even though it got wet at the end I think we played good defense. Considering the weather, I thought it was a pretty doggone good scrimmage."
