2001 - John Bunting - 41-27 loss at Oklahoma
1997 - Carl Torbush - 42-3 win vs. Virginia Tech (Gator Bowl)

Quarterback Bryn Renner made his first collegiate start in record-setting fashion. Renner completed 22 of 23 attempts for 277 yards. Renner threw two touchdown passes, both to Dwight Jones, and rushed for another. His only pass not competed was an interception in the second quarter by Dean Marlowe. The touchdowns were the first of his college career (both rushing and passing).
Renner's completion percentage of .957 is the highest in Atlantic Coast Conference single-game history for a passer with at least 20 attempts. Duke's Sean Renfree completed 28 of 30 for .933 against Navy in 2010. The previous mark for a passer with 20-29 attempts was .920 by Terry Jordan of NC State against the Tar Heels in 1992 (Jordan was 23 of 25).
Renner's pass completion percentage of .957 is the second-best in NCAA history for a player with 20 to 29 attempts. Tennessee's Tee Martin completed 23 of 24 for .958 against South Carolina on October 31, 1998.
Renner's completion percentage broke the previous UNC record of .810 set by Scott Stankavage vs. William and Mary in 1983. Stankavage completed 17 of 21 that day.
Carolina set an ACC team record for pass completion percentage in a game for a team with at least 15 attempts. The Tar Heels completed 22 of 23 attempts (.957) - all by Bryn Renner. The previous ACC record was .938 by Duke against Georgia Tech in 1960 (15 of 16).
Renner tied the UNC record for most consecutive completions in a game with 14 matching the record of Kevin Anthony vs. Wake Forest in 1985 and Jason Stanicek vs. NC State in 1992.
Senior wide receiver Dwight Jones caught nine passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns. It was the second two-touchdown game of his career (also at Virginia in 2010). It was his fifth career 100-yard game.
Redshirt freshman running back Giovanni Bernard rushed for a pair of touchdowns (12- and 14-yard runs) in the first half becoming the first freshman to score two rushing touchdowns in a game since Anthony Elzy against James Madison in 2007.
Senior tailback Ryan Houston added a 1-yard scoring run, his 19th career touchdown. He rushed 16 times for 59 yards and also caught three passes for 36 yards.
Carolina had 21 freshmen (10 true, 11 redshirt) see action against James Madison.
Senior defensive end Quinton Coples recorded two sacks, increasing his career total to 17.
Sophomore defensive end Kareem Martin recorded his first career sack in the third quarter.
Christian Wilson's 22-yard reception in the first quarter set a new career-long for the senior tight end.
The 28-7 halftime lead was the largest for the Tar Heels since Oct. 10, 2009, when Carolina outscored Georgia Southern 42-7 in the first half.
The Tar Heels outgained the Dukes 292-158 in the first half.
Casey Barth made all six of his point after attempts, extending his school record to 77 consecutive conversions.
