Renner Named Tar Heel Performer Of The Week

rynn Renner, a redshirt sophomore quarterback from West Springfield, Mass., has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for August 29-September 3 after his record setting performance in UNC's season opening 42-10 win over James Madison.
Renner completed 22 of 23 attempts for 277 yards. Renner threw two touchdown passes, both to Dwight Jones, and rushed for another. His only pass not competed was an interception in the second quarter by Dean Marlowe. The touchdowns were thefirst of his college career (both rushing and passing). Renner's completion percentage of .957 is the highest in Atlantic Coast Conference single-game history for a passer with at least 15 attempts. The previous mark for a passer with 20-29 attempts was .920 by Terry Jordan of NC State against the Tar Heels in 1992 (Jordan was 23 of 25). Renner's pass completion percentage of .957 is the second-best in NCAA history for a player with 20 to 29 attempts. Tennessee's Tee Martin completed 23 of 24 for .958 against South Carolina on October 31, 1998.

The ACC's top goal scorer, Billy Schuler, tallied his first two goal game since Nov. 3, 2009 in a 5-1 win over Oregon State on Friday before providing the game winner in Carolina's, 2-1, win over No. 1 Louisville on Sunday. Schuler has put four balls away on the year to rank atop the ACC leaderboard and has scored in every match this season for Carolina. The redshirt junior appeared in just two games a year ago due to injury but has come back strong in the early going as he has scored four goals in three games for the Tar Heels.

Kolojejchick had both the game-tying and game-winning goals as the No. 2 Tar Heels came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat No. 5 Syracuse 3-2 Friday in UNC?s home opener. After redshirt freshman Abby Frey got Carolina on the board in the 50th minute, Kolojejchick scored her first goal in 61st minute to tie to score. Just over two minutes later, at the 62:48 minute mark, she dived to push in a rebound following a Syracuse save and put UNC up 3-2 for the win. Kolojejchick leads Carolina in scoring this season with four goals, two of them gamewinners.

Senior Adelaide Gay, making only the second start of her Carolina career, went the full 90 minutes and recorded her first career shutout as the Tar Heels beat #18-ranked and 2010 NCAA semifinalist Ohio State 3-0 in Columbus, Ohio. Gay faced nine shots and many dangerous opportunities in the penalty box created by eight Ohio State corner kicks. She was credited with three saves including on shots by OSU's Paige Maxwell when the score was still tied 0-0 in the second half and a point blank save on a shot by Maxwell in the 55th minute that allowed the Tar Heels to retain a 1-0 lead. It was the first solo shutout by a Tar Heel goalkeeper since Hannah Daly blanked Wake Forest 2-0 on October 31, 2010.
