Tar Heels Fall To The Citadel

HAMPTON, Va. - North Carolina saw its run at the Virginia Duals come to an end Saturday morning as the Tar Heels were downed 22-15 at the hands of The Citadel in Hampton, Va. Evan Henderson, Corey Mock, Kyle Kiss and Thomas Ferguson all notched wins for the Tar Heels.
Carolina fell in an early 4-0 hole when Richard Alarcon of The Citadel claimed a 12-1 major decision over Brian Bokoski at 125 pounds. Senior Brock LiVorio fell by a narrow 9-8 margin at 133 pounds to Kyle Casaletto as The Citadel extended its lead to 7-0.
No. 14 Evan Henderson (141) pulled three points back for the Tar Heels as he claimed a 10-4 decision over Jordan Dix to make the score 7-3. A 4-2 decision by Seth Vernon over Jon Burns (149) made the score 10-3 before the Tar Heels battled all the way back.
No. 19 Corey Mock (157) started it off with a 1-0 decision over Pierre Frazile to make the deficit 10-6 before Kyle Kiss (165) won his third bout of the weekend with a 12-4 major decision against Mike Harper to knot things up at 10-10.
Freshman Alex Utley battled No. 18 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj at 174 pounds but Lunvsandorj came out with a 3-0 decision win to put The Citadel back in front 13-10.
Senior Thomas Ferguson (184) answered for the Tar Heels with a dominating 18-2 technical fall win over Josh Tuck to push Carolina back in front 15-13 with two bouts left.
Sophomore Zac Bennet dropped a narrow 7-5 decision to Kelby Smith at 197 pounds as The Citadel regained the lead at 16-15 before Odie Delaney pinned Frank Abbondanza at heavyweight to secure the win for The Citadel at 22-15.
Up next for the Tar Heels is a trip to Virginia for Saturday and Sunday duals against Virginia and No. 15 Virginia Tech.
