NEW YORK - Senior midfielder and Tar Heel captain Kirk Urso was picked 10th overall by the Columbus Crew Tuesday in the MLS Supplemental Draft. Urso became the fourth Tar Heel to be picked to join the ranks of the MLS as Matt Hedges and Enzo Martinez were selected in the first round of the MLS Draft on Friday, while Ben Speas signed a homegrown deal with Columbus last week.
Urso helped lead the Tar Heels to the 2011 National Championship in his senior campaign as he became Carolina's all-time matches played leader and closed out his career with three goals and seven assists in 2011.
Urso was selected 10th overall in first round of Tuesday's Supplemental Draft and is the second Tar Heel in as many years to be taken in the Supplemental Draft as Dustin McCarty was taken by the LA Galaxy in 2011 and played for the eventual MLS Cup Champions.
The Lombard, Ill., native will have a familiar face to play along side in Columbus as he will join forward Ben Speas who was signed to a homegrown deal by the Crew last week.
