Postgame Notes
January 29, 2012
Carolina extended its school record by winning its 31st consecutive home game.
Kendall Marshall had 12 assists and one turnover. It was his ninth game this year with 10 or more assists and the 15th of his career. He tied Phil Ford for the second-most 10-assist games in a season. Ford also had nine as a sophomore in 1975-76. The record is 12 by Ed Cota in 1997-98 in his sophomore season.
Marshall's assist-error ratio of 12 to 1 is only his third-best of the season. He had 15 assists and one turnover against UNC Asheville and was 14:1 against South Carolina.
Marshall is averaging 7.48 assists per game in his career, moving him slightly ahead of Ed Cota for the best average in UNC history. Cota averaged 7.46 (1030 assists in 138 games). Marshall has 434 assists in 58 games.
Marshall is averaging 9.7 assist per game this year, which would be best ever by a Tar Heel (the record is 8.1 by Cota in 2000).
Marshall's assist-error ratio this year is 3.46 to 1 (204 assists, 59 turnovers). That is the second-best in UNC single-season history (Ty Lawson, 3.49 in 2008-09). In two years, Marshall's ratio is 2.87 to 1, the best ratio by any Tar Heel (Lawson is second at 2.78).
John Henson blocked four shots tonight and has 247 in his career. He passed Sam Perkins for second place in UNC history and 14th place in ACC history. Perkins blocked 245 shots in four seasons from 1980-84.
Henson holds the UNC record for blocks per game at 2.6 per game. That is 12th-best in ACC history. Since the start of his freshman season, Henson has blocked 187 shots in 58 games, an average of 3.2 per game (which would be fifth-best in ACC history).
Harrison Barnes led all scorers with 23 points. It's his eighth 20-point game this season - he had eight such performances in 37 contests as a freshman.
Carolina hit a season-high 62.5 percent from three-point range, making 10 of 16 from behind the arc. It was the first time since the fourth game of the season against Tennessee State that five different Tar Heels connected on a three.
Carolina made eight of its 10 three-pointers in the first half. Prior to tonight, the most threes UNC made in an ACC game this year was five against Boston College and NC State.
The Tar Heels shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half and 54.1 percent for the game. That is the highest percentage in a half since UNC shot 61.8 in the opening half against Monmouth on Jan. 1, 2012, and the highest percentage in a game since the Tar Heels shot 54.4 against Monmouth.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak to Georgia Tech, the longest by UNC in series history. The Tar Heels are now 61-24 against the Yellow Jackets, including 21-4 in the SmithCenter.
Reggie Bullock scored in double figures in his second consecutive start. He had 11 points on 4 of 7 shooting, including 3 of 6 from three-point range. He leads the Tar Heels with 40 three-pointers this season.
James Michael McAdoo had nine points and six rebounds (he had nine total points in the first five ACC games).
