Blue Team Rolls To FWS Win
October 14, 2012 | Baseball
The Blue Team slugged out 17 hits that led to 19 runs as they claimed the second series with a 19-5 win and were crowned the Fall World Series Champions.
A four-run first would put the Blue Team in front before freshman right-hander Trent Thornton even took the mound Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
Senior Chaz Frank continued his destruction on the base paths as he opened the first with a single up the middle and stole second base. After a hit by pitch and a fly out the Blue Team had runners at the corners when Landon Lassiter and Frank executed a perfect double steal to score the game's first run.
Matt Roberts and Parks Jordan would follow with back-to-back RBI singles before Roberts scored the fourth run of the inning. With the bases loaded a wild pitch on strike three allowed Michael Massardo to reach and Roberts to score from third.
Junior Benton Moss settled down after the shaky first and allowed just one hit over the next two innings, while his counterpart Trent Thornton did not surrender a hit the first time through the lineup.
The Blue Team took advantage of a pair of White Team errors in the fourth inning to blow the game open. Frank started the rally once again when he was hit by a pitch to open the inning and immediately stole second base.
Lassiter singled home Frank from second and Brian Holberton made it a 6-0 ballgame with a double down the right field line. Jordan and Grayson Atwood would later add RBI hits in the six run inning that boosted the Blue Team lead to 10-0 after four and a half innings.
The White Team finally broke into the scoring column in the bottom half of the fourth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Korey Dunbar.
The Blue Team would answer right back with another pair of runs in the top half of the fifth when Matt Roberts reached on a RBI fielder's choice. Parks Jordan would drive in his third run of the afternoon later in the frame with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Thornton threw a 1-2-3 fifth inning before his offense tacked on another run in the sixth on a RBI groundout from Chaz Frank.
Trailing 13-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning the White Team bats came to life as Michael Russell doubled, Cody Stubbs singled and Tom Zengel doubled in a three-run inning that cut the deficit to nine runs at 13-4.
The Blue Team tacked on a single run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to extend its lead to 17-4 after seven and a half innings.
The White Team loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth and were able to push one run across before freshman Dallas Newton picked up a strikeout and a fly out to escape further damage.
Two more runs in the ninth secured the 19-5 victory for the Blue Team as Trent Thornton posted his second win of the Fall World Series.
