GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior closer Michael Morin had a hand in all five Tar Heel victories this week and for his efforts was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Morin went 1-0 with four saves for the week as he helped the Tar Heels sweep their ACC opening series at No. 17 Clemson.
The Tar Heel closer appeared in all five wins this week, including a series sweep at No. 17 Clemson. Morin opened the week by notching saves in midweek wins over Davidson and at Elon on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Leawood, Kan., native entered in the eighth inning Friday night with the game-tying run at second and picked up a strike out before tossing a scoreless ninth to complete the save.
After a three-run ninth by the Tar Heels Saturday, Morin came on and earned his second straight save of the weekend with a scoreless inning.
A ninth inning rally that tied the Sunday contest saw Morin enter in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run at third base and the right-hander struck out Thomas Brittle to end the threat and send the game to extra innings.
Morin then picked up a big double play in the 10th before tossing a 1-2-3 11th to earn his first win of the year.
The junior right-hander is currently tied for the most saves in the ACC with six on the year, four of which came this week. He has not allowed a run this season in 10 appearances spanning 12.1 innings and owns a 13/2 K/BB ratio while opponents are hitting only .209 on the yea.
Morin moved into fifth on the UNC all-time saves list this week with 19 for his career, passing Paul Shuey's mark of 18.
