Foulks Hits Go-Ahead Home Run To Down Pirates

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Logan Foulks hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, propelling North Carolina (18-7) to a 4-2 victory over in-state rival East Carolina (10-14) Tuesday evening at Anderston Stadium. Constance Orr also recorded a two-run home run in the win over the Pirates.
The Pirates threatened in the top of the second inning, placing a runner on third with two outs. But Spingola fanned ECU centerfielder Jasmine Robbins to keep the game scoreless.
With two outs in the bottom half of the second, Amber Parrish lined a double to left center field. Constance Orr then blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence, propelling the Tar Heels to an early 2-0 lead.
East Carolina's Suzanne Riggs belted a one-out home run off the scoreboard in left field in the top of the fourth, pairing the Carolina advantage to one, 2-1. The Pirates' first baseman Priscilla Velasquez tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning, with a solo home run to left center field.
Kelli Wheeler countered for Carolina in the bottom half of the frame with a lead-off double to right center. Tisha Mahon then came in to pinch run and Amy Nece moved her over to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Logan Foulks then roped a two-run home run down the right field line, pushing the Tar Heels back ahead, 4-2.
Lori Spingola was strong in the circle for UNC, scattering five hits, two earned runs and two walks over seven innings to pick up her 12th win of the season. The sophomore pitcher, who is currently fourth in the nation in strikeouts, also fanned nine Pirate batters.
Carolina next travels to Elon, N.C., for a 4 p.m. showdown Wednesday, March 14, with the Elon Phoenix.
