UNC-Vermont Postgame Notes
Friday, March 16, 2012
Greensboro, N.C.
- Senior Tyler Zeller posted his 18th double-double of the season, finishing with 17 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. He now has 1,458 career points, moving past Shammond Williams (1,445) and Jason Capel (1,447) for 29th place in UNC history (18th among four-year players).
- Including today, Zeller has scored 120 points in his last five NCAA Tournament games (24.0 per game).
- Junior forward John Henson did not play versus Vermont. He was replaced in the starting lineup for the third game in a row by freshman James Michael McAdoo, who finished with a season-high 17 points, six rebounds and four steals. This was the second time in the last four games that McAdoo scored in double figures. Prior to the ACC Tournament quarterfinal, he had not scored in double figures since Dec. 19 vs. Nicholls.
- Kendall Marshall had 11 points and 10 assists vs. Vermont. He set an ACC single-season record with his 16th game with double-figure assists, breaking the previous mark of 15 set by NC State's Chris Corchiani in 1990-91. Marshall scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game - he had four double-figure scoring outings in UNC's first 30 games prior to the current run.
- With 10 assists on Friday, Marshall moved past Southern's Avery Johnson for fourth place on the NCAA single-season assist list. Marshall has 340 assists this season. Anthony Manuel of Bradley is third with 373 in 1987-88.
- This is the third time in five NCAA Tournament games that Marshall has dished out at least 10 assists. He had 14 vs. Washington and 10 vs. Long Island in 2011. He is second in UNC history in double-digit assist NCAA Tournament games (Ed Cota had four).
- With the win on Friday, UNC is 106-40 in NCAA Tournament games. That is tied with Kentucky for the most wins in NCAA Tournament history (prior to Kentucky's game on Saturday).
- The Tar Heels are now 48-9 as a No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament play.
- Friday's win over Vermont means that UNC head coach Roy Williams has won at least one game in all 22 of his NCAA Tournament appearances.
- Williams has led Carolina to a 25-5 record in eight NCAA Tournament appearances, winning the NCAA title in 2005 and 2009. Williams's NCAA winning percentage of .833 at Carolina is the best in NCAA history by a coach at a school (minimum 25 NCAA Tournament games).
- UNC has won at least one game in each of its last 10 NCAA Tournament appearances since a first-round loss to Weber State in 1999 (which was the only time in its last 28 NCAA Tournaments that UNC failed to win at least one game).
- Carolina is now 30-1 in NCAA Tournament games played in the state of North Carolina and has 26 such games in a row (last losing on March 11, 1979, to Penn in Raleigh). That 30-1 record includes a 6-0 record in Greensboro, 11-0 in Charlotte, 6-0 in Winston-Salem and 7-1 in Raleigh.
- Carolina's NCAA second-round win over Vermont was its 30th of the season, giving the Tar Heels their 11th 30-win season in history. The Tar Heels are now 30-5 this season.
- This is Carolina's fifth 30-win season in nine years under head coach Roy Williams, who has 10 30-win seasons in 24 years as a head coach. Williams's 10 30-win seasons are second-most in NCAA history behind Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (12).
- UNC's win over Vermont was the 59th NCAA Tournament win for Williams as a head coach, third-most in NCAA history behind Krzyzewski and UNC's Dean Smith.
- Carolina is 2-0 all-time versus Creighton. Sunday's game will be the first meeting between the schools since Dec. 12, 1970.
