Carolina Golfers Finish Second At ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 6 ranked University of North Carolina women's golf team finished play at the 2012 ACC Championships in second place after shooting a 9-over-par 293 in the final round. The Tar Heels three-day total of 885 left them ten strokes behind Duke, who held the lead since the first day of the tournament.
Carolina was led by sophomore Casey Grice, who fired a 1-under-par 70 in the final round and finished with a 4-over 217 total. Grice, from College Station, Texas, finished in fifth place in the individual race. Allie White and Katherine Perry both shot 2-over-par 73's in the final round. White, a senior from Lancaster, Ohio, finished in sixth place with a 6-over-par 219 total. Perry, a sophomore from Cary, N.C., finished the tournament in 10th place with a 10-over-par 223 total. Catherine O'Donnell, a senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., shot a 6-over-par 77 and finished in a tie for 14th place with a 13-over-par 226 total. Jackie Chang, a sophomore from Paradise Valley, Ariz., shot a 10-over-par 81 in the third round for a 240 total and finished in a tie for 40th place.
Duke captured the ACC Championship on Sunday, as they never let go of the lead that they grabbed in the first round. The Blue Devils shot an 8-over-par 292 on Sunday for a 23-over-par 875 three-day total. Carolina finished in second place ten strokes back of Duke with an 885 total after a 9-over-par 293 on Sunday. Wake Forest finished in third place at 40-over-par 892 after shooting a 5-over-par 289 on Sunday. Florida State and Virginia rounded out the top five with 899 and 903 totals, respectively. NC State finished in sixth place at 909, Maryland finished seventh at 917, Miami finished eighth at 928 and Boston College finished ninth at 934.
Lindy Duncan of Duke won the individual title with a 3-under-par total of 210. Duncan, who shot an even-par 71 on Sunday, won the individual title by six shots. Duke's Alejandra, Florida State's Maria Salinas and Wake Forest's Olafia Kristinsdottir finished in a tie for second place at 3-over-par 216. Carolina's Casey Grice and Allie White finished in fifth and sixth places, respectively. Florida State's Jessica Negron and Wake Forest's Cheyenne Woods finished in a tie for seventh place at 7-over-par 220 after each golfer fired a 1-over-par 72 on Sunday. Duke's Laetitia Beck finished in ninth place at 9-over-par 222 after a 1-over-par 72 on Sunday. Tar Heel Katherine Perry rounded out the top-10 with her 10-over-par 223 performance.
This year's ACC Championships was played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., which features a par 71, 6,163-yard layout. The No. 6 Tar Heels now await on a bid to the NCAA Regionals which will be played May 10-12.
