Charlotte Upsets No. 19 Tar Heels

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Charlotte put up five runs in the third inning to take a three-run lead and never looked back, upsetting No. 19 North Carolina, 10-6, Tuesday evening. UNC tallied five home runs in the loss, including two from sophomore Logan Foulks. The loss to the 49ers snaps a 12-game unbeaten streak for the Tar Heels, as they fall to 36-11 on the year.
Kelli Wheeler led off the game with a solo home run over the right field fence, propelling the Tar Heels to an early 1-0 lead.
The leadoff batter for the 49ers reached base on a hit-by-pitch and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Lorena Vela. Spingola struck Briana Gwaltney out looking and got Samantha Slade to pop up, stranding the runner at second.
Logan Foulks blasted a solo home run off the scoreboard in right center field to lead off the top of the second, pushing UNC ahead by two runs, 2-0.
After striking out the first two batters in the bottom half of the third inning, Spingola surrendered a single and walked two straight batters to load the bases. Spingola then hit Slade with a pitch, as the 49ers put a run on the board to trim the deficit to one, 2-1. The bases were still loaded for Kalie Gibson as she hit a grand slam to left field as the 49ers went ahead, 5-2.
Charlotte added two more runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Alex Rogers down the left field line, increasing the Niners' lead to five, 7-2.
Ashley Bone came in to relieve Spingola in the fifth frame after she surrendered a double and asingle to lead off the inning.
Chelsey Stamey notched a RBI-single to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning, increasing the 49er advantage to six, 8-2.
Haleigh Dickey hit a one out, two-run home run to right center field in the top of the sixth and Foulks immediately followed up with her second solo shot of the game to left field, paring the 49er advantage to three, 8-5. Constance Orr made it back-to-back-to-back home runs for the Tar Heels, hitting a solo shot to left field and cutting the deficit to two, 8-6.
It is the second time the Tar Heels have hit three successive home runs this season, also having done so against Chattanooga Feb. 11, at the National Invitational Tournament in Clermont, Fla.
Jackie Kleinsmith hit a grounder to Dickey in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and Dickey could not make the play, allowing two more runs to score as the 49ers went ahead by four, 10-6.
Spingola was credited with the loss, giving up five hits and eight runs--six earned--over four innings of work. The sophomore pitcher had won her last eight starts, with her last loss coming April 2, at Florida State.
one threw two innings in relief, allowing one hit, two runs, two walks and struck out a pair of batters.
This marks the second time in the last five games the Tar Heels have tallied five home runs in a game. The Tar Heels also had five home runs in a 12-2 (5) win against Hampton April 19.
Carolina continues its road trip as it heads to Radford, Va., for a doubleheader against the Radford Highlanders Wednesday, beginning at 3 p.m.
