CORAL GABLES, Fla. - No. 3 North Carolina was held to six hits in an 8-0 setback at No. 9 Miami Friday night in Coral Gables, Fla. The Tar Heels fall to 23-7 on the year and into a tie with the Hurricanes atop the ACC Coastal division standings at 9-4. The shutout is the second of the season suffered by the Tar Heels.
Carolina fell behind in the very first inning when a lead off double turned into a 1-0 lead for the Hurricanes when Peter O'Brien grounded out to second to provide the early advantage.
Kent Emanuel worked out of trouble in the second when the eight and nine hitters for Miami reached base with two outs in the inning.
The sophomore left-hander was not as lucky in the third when Chantz Mack singled in a pair of runs with two outs in the frame after Emanuel looked to be out of danger.
Carolina was held without a runner in the second through fourth innings and managed just one hit through the first four frames against Miami starter Eric Erickson.
Miami tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth when the Hurricanes took advantage of a two-base throwing error to open the frame. Emanuel fielded a pair of come backers and was nearly out of trouble but Mack once again got the better of Emanuel and notched a RBI single to make it 4-0 in favor of Miami.
The Tar Heels mounted a threat in the sixth as Chaz Frank opened the inning with a single through the right side. Jacob Stallings stepped to the plate after a pair of outs kept Frank at first and dropped a single into center field and made his way to second base on the throw to third.
Cody Stubbs stepped in with a pair of runners in scoring position and blasted a ball but to the deepest part of the park that was tracked down by the center fielder for the third out.
Miami added a run in the seventh as UNC used four different pitchers in the frame after back-to-back walks to open the game.
