CORAL GABLES, Fla. - No. 3 Carolina was shutout for the second time in a three-game series for the first time since 1992 when Princeton when No. 9 Miami claimed a 4-0 win Sunday afternoon in Coral Gables, Fla. Freshman Benton Moss struck out nine batters over 6.1 innings of work as he fell to 2-2 on the year.
The Tar Heels fell behind 1-0 in the second when Carolina committed an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt and the Canes loaded the bases before a walk forced in an unearned run.
Miami tacked on another run in the third when Michael Russell dropped a fly ball with a runner on third to make it 2-0.
Carolina threatened in the fourth with three walks to load the bases but were unable to come through with a key hit as they left the fourth still trailing 2-0.
Carolina drew two more walks in the fifth but the pair of free passes was mixed in with three strikeouts as the Tar Heels stranded another pair of runners.
Miami tacked on two more runs in the seventh on just one hit as the Tar Heels committed their third error of the game and were in a 4-0 hole going to the final two frames.
Carolina put a pair of runners on in the eighth thanks to a Shell McCain walk and a catcher's interference for Adam Griffin but back-to-back ground outs ended the potential threat.
Freshman Benton Moss suffered his second loss of the year but rang up nine strikeouts over his 6.1 innings on the mound.
The Tar Heels were held to three runs over the weekend for the first time since 1996 when UNC was swept at Florida State.
The pair of shutouts were the first suffered by the Tar Heels in ACC play and the first time since 1992 against Princeton.
Carolina will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they host UNC Asheville at 6 p.m. before traveling to Virginia for a three-game set beginning Friday night.
