Carolina Golfers Tied For Second At NCAA Championships

FRANKLIN, TENN. - The No. 6 ranked University of North Carolina women's golf team is tied for second place following the second round of the NCAA Championships. Carolina fired a 4-over-par 292 on Tuesday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club for a 6-over 582 total, 11 strokes behind leader Alabama. The Tar Heels rallied on the last two holes with the four counting players firing five birdies and just one bogey, thus finishing 4-under on those two holes.
"The thing I love about this team is that on a given day any of these five players can step up and post a low score," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann, in her third year at the helm. "The team finished very strong today. They have a lot determination and heart. We are looking forward to tomorrow's round."
Senior Catherine O'Donnell who was tied for third after the first round shot a 4-over-par 76 and is tied for 13th place at even par 144. O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was 6-over after 13 holes, but fought back and carded birdies on two of the last four holes (#15 and #17) to get it back to 4-over on the day. Sophomore Katherine Perry led the Tar Heels in the second round by firing a 2-under 70. The Cary, N.C. native is tied for 16th place at 1-over 145. She carded birdies on the last two holes after posting pars on the first 16 holes. Sophomore Casey Grice and senior Allie White both carded a 5-over 149 total and are tied for 53rd. Grice, from College Station, Texas, posted an even par 72 while White, from Lancaster, Ohio, carded a 2-over 74. Courtney Gunter, a junior from Matthews, N.C., struggled in the second round shooting an 83 for an 11-over 155 total and is tied for 101st.
Alabama extended its first-round lead. The Crimson Tide held a two-stroke lead going into the second round and fired a 3-under-par 285 for a 5-under 571 total, 11 strokes ahead of Carolina, Virginia and UCLA. Those three teams are deadlocked in second place with a 6-over 582 total. South Carolina fired the low round of the day, a 7-under 281. The Gamecocks are tied with Arizona State at 7-over 583 in fifth place. Southern California is in seventh place at 9-over 585 while LSU is eighth at 11-over 587. Rounding out the top 10 are Purdue in ninth place at 588 and host Vanderbilt 10th with a 590 total.
Brooke Pancake of Alabama grabbed the individual lead by firing a 2-under-par 70 in the second round for a 6-under 138 total, two strokes ahead of Arizona State's Giuila Molinara who fired a 1-under 71 and is alone in second place at 4-under 140. Three players are tied for third place at 3-under 141 - South Carolina's Katie Burnett, NC State's Brittany Marchand and Virginia's Portland Rosen. Another trio is tied for sixth place at 2-under 142 - Alabama's Stephanie Meadow, LSU's Madelene Sagstrom and Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil.
The 72 hole event continues through Friday. Like the first round, the second round was played at a par 72, 6,377-yard layout at Vanderbilt Legends Club. The Tar Heels begin teeing off the first tee Thursday at 1:55 EDT. Live scoring is available on TarHeelBlue.com.
