Samantha Marks Qualifies For U.S. Open
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Katherine Perry, a rising junior on the University of North Carolina women's golf team, qualified for the 2012 U.S. Women's Open on Thursday. Perry qualified at Carolina Country Club in Sanford, N.C., a par 72 layout. Perry and Cheyenne Woods tied for first place at that sectional qualifier with a 2-over 146 total. Both players fired identical scores of 74-72 and will now play in the U.S. Women's Open July 5-8 at Blackwolf Run Championship Course in Kohler, Wis.
Perry tied for eighth place at last week's NCAA Championships while leading the Tar Heels to a 10th-place finish. An All-ACC selecton this year, Perry was named an honorable mention All-America by the National Golf Coaches Association. She five top-20 and six top-30 finishes this spring and another top-30 finish last fall. She finished the year with a 74.60 scoring average with five under-par rounds, two in the 60s, and one even par round.
Earlier in the week, Samantha Marks, who will join the Tar Heel women's golf team in the fall, also qualified for the 2012 U.S Women's Open. Marks qualified at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md., by firing a two-round total of 6-over-par 150, a tie for fourth place.
