Final Rankings For 2012 Season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coach Sam Paul's 2012 University of North Carolina men's tennis team finished the past campaign ranked No. 16 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association coaches' poll. The Tar Heels compiled a record of 15-8 overall in 2012, carded a 9-2 ledger in the Atlantic Coast Conference and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time since 2006.
This marked the seventh time since 2004 that the Tar Heels have finished the season ranked in the Top 20 of the final ITA rankings.
In the singles rankings, junior Jose Hernandez of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic finished with a ranking of 30th while senior Brennan Boyajian of Weston, Fla. was ranked 91st. Hernandez finished the 2011-12 season with a singles record 18-11, including a 12-7 mark in dual matches and a 9-2 record in ACC dual matches. Hernandez was 8-10 against ranked players and 8-3 in three-set matches. Boyajian capped the campaign with a 16-13 overall record including 11-9 in dual matches and 8-3 in ACC dual matches. Boyajian was 5-8 versus nationally ranked players and 4-3 in three-set matches.
A pair of UNC doubles teams were in the final national rankings. Hernandez and senior Joey Burkhardt of St. Augustine, Fla. were ranked 17th while Boyajian and freshman Oystein Steiro of Snayora, Norway were 61st.
Burkhardt and Hernandez emerged as one of the top doubles combos in the nation with a 13-3 overall record, including 9-2 in the ACC. The duo was 4-3 against nationally-ranked teams. The tandem was eliminated in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament 7-6, 7-6 by the eventual NCAA championship team from Ohio State. Boyajian and Steiro were 5-4 in 2011-12, including 5-4 in dual matches and 3-2 in the ACC. The duo played the majority of its matches at the No. 1 doubles match, going 4-4.
